Master Programme in Biomedicine, 120 ECTS credits
If you want to participate in research about diseases and understand why some people get sick and others don't, we recommend that you supplement your bachelor's degree with a Master in Biomedicine. After graduating, you will contribute to the development of new methods of diagnostics and treatment, which can be implemented into the health care system.
The programme is given on the advanced level entirely, and will give you in-depth knowledge of the genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology of the human body. This knowledge is essential for understanding infectious disease, cancer and neurological disease, to name but a few. The Master programme in Biomedicine will give you knowledge and skills to use advanced scientific methods and will prepare you for you PhD or for work with biomedical issues within companies, authorities or the health care system.
Areas of Excellence
The Master's Programme is opened with a common foundation course in Biomedicine. The course is composed by the four Areas of Excellence that have been identified in the field of Biomedicine at Umeå University: infections, cancer, metabolic diseases and the nervous system. In the foundation course you will also be trained in bioinformatics, biostatistics, theory of knowledge, ethics and in the search for information.
Have yourself a tailor-made education
Following the foundation course you will be presented with an abundance of biomedical courses to choose from. The project work will give you in-depth knowledge in your field of choice. You can choose from courses in bacterial virulence mechanims, parasites and virus, tumour biology, neurobiology, developmental biology, or the structure and function of proteins. Many of the teachers you'll meet are leading scientists within their field.
You can also choose to do a project work on advanced level (30 ECTS credits) where you'll get the opportunity to do independent laboratory work in a subject of your own choice. You can also include electible courses given in other departments, faculties or universities and freely customise your own education.
The concluding project work can be 30 or 45 ECTS credits, it's up to you to decide. During the programme you'll be trained in experimental design, in evaluating your results and in learning to present your work in various scientific formats.
